Boats let us walk on water, paddle into hidden coves and creeks, even sail a wooden shoe “on a river of crystal light into a sea of dew.” But a boat is made not just to float us. “Life is too short to own an ugly boat,” says a bumper-sticker. Lines of a well-designed boat, especially one of wood—whether it’s lovingly tended or roughly worked—streamline passage through the water while also sweeping us to a sweet spot in the mind’s eye.
Created by mind and hand, a boat comes alive in its own way. In a boat, even at the dock, we are moving, cradled in the amniotic fluid. A boat suspended on the hard is drained of essence, oddly hollow. A sagging boat moving one step closer to the burn pile is a metaphor for us. Boats bear our dreams.
